Do I Need a Fractional CFO?

Fractional CFOs, also known as part-time CFOs, are a great option when you need an executive-level finance professional but don't have the need for a full-time CFO.

Growing Organizations

Early-stage companies benefit greatly from financial guidance to manage rapid growth, secure funding, and establish financial processes without needing the resources for a full-time CFO. A Fractional CFO is a great way for companies to access the experience of an expert CFO at any stage.

Significant Transitions

Companies often face significant transitions throughout their lifecycle, such as periods of rapid growth, downsizing, mergers, acquisitions, or ownership changes. These transitions can be complex and challenging, requiring a level of financial expertise and strategic guidance that may exceed the company's current resources. In these situations, a Fractional CFO can be an invaluable asset, providing the necessary skills and experience to help the organization navigate these critical junctures.

Specialized Expertise

When companies face unique financial challenges or embark on complex projects that fall outside the scope of their everyday operations, they often require specialized expertise to navigate these situations effectively. A Fractional CFO can serve as the outside expert that provides both subject matter expertise and strategic guidance on making decisions related to these complex issues.

Ad Hoc Advisory

On-demand expertise provides a responsive approach that allows companies to tap into high-level financial expertise whenever they need it, without the overhead of a full-time CFO. The immediacy and reliability of a Fractional CFO's guidance gives organizations confidence to pursue lofty goals knowing they are supported by an expert finance professionals when needed.

What is a Fractional CFO?

A fractional CFO is a senior finance executive who leads your company's financial strategy on a part-time basis.

The role exists because most companies between $5M and $100M in revenue have outgrown a bookkeeper but don't yet need a full-time CFO. A fractional CFO fills that gap. They handle cash flow forecasting, board and investor reporting, fundraising preparation, KPI dashboards, and finance team leadership.

At McCracken Alliance, our fractional CFOs are former Fortune 500 and PE-backed company CFOs with 25+ years of operating experience. You get the caliber of a full-time hire at a fraction of the commitment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are your CFOs located?

We work across all 50 states both in-person and virtually. We also serve select international markets.

How much does a Fractional CFO cost?

Our Fractional CFO rates cost between $200 - $225 per hour, but there is no minimum on the number of hours at which you engage with our CFOs. Other CFO firms typically charge minimums that require you to commit a larger budget to any engagement where the common rate is $250 per hour or more.

When does a startup need a fractional CFO?

A startup or small business can benefit from the council of a seasoned industry CFO from day one, but realistically the startup won't have demands on their finance and accounting function that warrant the involvement of a CFO until they've raised seed capital. Preparing for future rounds of funding is just one of the many areas in which a fractional CFO can add value to a startup.

What should a fractional CFO do at a company?

A fractional CFO's involvement depends greatly on the stage and current needs of the organization. In smaller companies, the fractional CFO may personally take on a broad set of responsibilities, including managing the books, negotiating contracts, and more. In a larger company, the fractional CFO may oversee and guide the controller who manages the accounting processes as well as other leaders in the finance function.
